At least 13 people killed and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
